Our great company was founded 17 years ago. While doing financial planning
for clients, the owners were aghast when it became glaringly apparent that a
number of otherwise intelligent people had made poor mortgage choices.
Even the most intelligent of people seemed susceptible to poor mortgage
choices. A further examination revealed a common thread. The mortgage
process had been poorly explained, and rates were promised that couldn't be
delivered. However, once the application and paperwork had started (even
though people were disappointed and their attorneys sometimes even outraged),
people just stayed with the bad choice rather than restart the mortgage
process; because, it was so time consuming and painful.
Our owners contacted every existing client with instructions on how
to get the best mortgage terms. Within a year's time all clients were aware
of the pitfalls. Almost immediately, we started getting inquiries from
clients about getting them a mortgage. We informed them we would look their
applications over as part of our process; however, we were not in the
mortgage business
We were met with a resounding "Why not? You handle our insurance,
investments, and retirement. Why not this asset?"
The owners agreed it was just more of what they were already doing: Advising
clients on sound financial choices. As a result, a new company Preferred
Funding Services, Inc. was formed.
The first day we were informed that this was a different mortgage company.
There were 2 rules:
- We were to service existing clients only, their family or referrals.
- No advertising allowed.
Not a penny was to be spent on advertising. The founders felt advertising
was an expense ultimately passed on to the client and we would not do
that. Word of mouth was the only form of advertising. The founder's opinion on advertising was
"If you're happy with our results, you'll tell your friends."
Professionals in the industry scoffed at the concept of not
advertising in the mortgage business, thinking that Preferred Funding would
"be out of business in a year."
Well that was then; this is now ... and, we're still here.
Nothing has changed in 17 years. Still, no advertising
is allowed. This web site is not tied to any search engine.
